A Regular/Medium tree is generally a better starting point for a horse with more defined withers and a narrower or steeper shoulder. A Wide/FQHB tree is generally a better starting point for a broader, flatter shoulder and lower withers.
Those are starting tendencies, not universal measurements. Western saddle tree terminology is not standardized, so the same label can fit differently from one manufacturer to another.
What Does Regular or Medium Usually Mean?
Regular, Medium, Semi Quarter Horse Bars, and similar terms are often used for a steeper front angle and a horse with more definition through the withers.
That does not mean every Thoroughbred, Arabian, Appendix, or lighter-built Quarter Horse automatically needs a Medium tree. The individual horse still controls the recommendation.
What Does Wide or Full Quarter Horse Bars Mean?
Wide or Full Quarter Horse Bars usually indicate a flatter, more open front angle for a broader horse. This is common in many Quarter Horses, Paints, and other broad, lower-withered horses.
Again, the label is only a shortcut. Bar angle, flare, rock, and overall tree design matter as much as the advertised gullet width.
How Can You Tell If a Saddle Is Too Narrow?
A too-narrow saddle commonly sits high in front and can pinch through the shoulders. Adding a thicker pad usually makes a narrow saddle even tighter.
How Can You Tell If a Saddle Is Too Wide?
A too-wide saddle may drop too low in front, lose wither clearance, or feel unstable. Padding can sometimes fine-tune a mild balance issue, but it should not be used to correct a major width mismatch.
Why You Should Not Choose Tree Size From Horse Weight Alone
Weight can offer a clue about overall build, but two horses of the same weight can have completely different shoulders, withers, rib spring, and toplines. Use the horse's shape, not a weight threshold, to make the final decision.
