Best Saddles for Flat-Backed Horses

A flat-backed horse usually needs a saddle with a flatter bar profile and a tree width that matches the horse's shoulders. The common mistake is choosing a saddle with too much front-to-back curve, which can make the saddle rock or concentrate pressure in the wrong places.

Many flat-backed horses are also broad and low-withered, but those traits do not always occur together. We recommend fitting the individual horse rather than assuming every flat back needs the widest tree available.

What Does "Flat-Backed" Mean?

Viewed from the side, a flat-backed horse has relatively little dip or curvature through the topline. From the front or rear, the horse may also appear broad across the back and rib cage.

A saddle whose bars have considerably more rock than the horse needs may move front to back instead of settling evenly over the horse.

Tree Shape Matters More Than One Measurement

Gullet width is useful information, but it does not describe the entire tree. Bar angle, flare, and front-to-back rock all affect how the saddle sits.

That is why two saddles with similar advertised widths can fit differently. If your horse is broad and flat, look for a tree designed for that shape rather than shopping by gullet measurement alone.

What About Saddle Pads?

A flatter or straight-back pad often works well when the saddle and horse already match reasonably well. Avoid trying to fix a major tree mismatch with excessive padding. Adding thickness to a saddle that is already too narrow can make the problem worse.

If the Horse Is Also Short-Backed

Then you are solving two separate questions: tree shape and saddle length. A round or compact skirt can help with length while the correct tree handles the shoulder and topline fit.
