Best Saddles for Broad-Shouldered Horses

Broad shoulders usually call for more room through the front of the saddle, but "broad-shouldered" does not automatically mean the widest tree available. The best fit matches the horse's shoulder angle, width, withers, and topline together.

A common problem is choosing a saddle that looks wide enough at the gullet but is still too steep through the bars. That can create pressure behind the shoulder and restrict movement.

Fit the Shoulder First

The front of the tree should sit behind the shoulder blade and follow the horse's shape without pinching. If the horse has broad shoulders and high withers, do not choose a narrow tree just to create more wither clearance. The shoulder fit still needs enough room.

Likewise, a broad horse with low withers may need a flatter, wider tree, but the exact configuration depends on the individual horse.

Wide and Extra Wide Are Not Standardized

Different saddle makers use different trees, angles, and measurements. A "Wide" from one manufacturer may not fit exactly like a "Wide" from another.

A saddle placed too far forward can make a broad-shouldered horse look harder to fit than it really is. Make sure the bars are behind the scapula so the shoulder can rotate freely.

What Type of Saddle Should You Shop For?

Start with the riding discipline you actually need, then filter by the correct tree, rider seat size, and saddle length. Trail, ranch, barrel, and other saddle types can all be appropriate if the tree matches the horse and the saddle suits the job.
