How to Choose Fender and Stirrup Length

Correct fender and stirrup length should let the rider maintain a relaxed leg and balanced seat without reaching down for the stirrups or having the knees forced sharply upward. Rider height helps, but inseam, thigh length, saddle design, and preferred discipline are more useful than height alone.

Begin With a Practical Adjustment

As a starting check, set the stirrup so it is near the ankle when the rider sits centered with the leg hanging relaxed. Then fine-tune while riding. Trail, ranch, and performance riders may prefer slightly different positions.

Confirm the Adjustment Range

Short riders may need shorter fenders, additional holes, or youth fenders. Tall riders need enough leather below the lowest useful hole without placing the buckle or adjustment hardware in an uncomfortable location. Our guide to correct stirrup length explains the riding-position check.

Consider Fender Shape and Bulk

Wide or long fenders can crowd a short rider even when the stirrup technically adjusts high enough. A tall rider may feel restricted by short fenders or a seat that puts the stirrup attachment too far forward.

Check Both Sides

Leather can stretch with use, especially on the mounting side. Measure or compare both sides periodically and adjust as needed.
