How to Measure Yourself for a Western Saddle Seat

Western seat size is best chosen from a combination of the rider’s build, the saddle’s seat shape, intended use, and personal preference. Height or weight alone cannot determine the correct size, and the same labeled size can feel different in two saddle designs.

Use a Size Chart as a Starting Point

Begin with our western saddle seat-size chart, then consider thigh length and how you prefer to sit. Riders with the same weight may need different sizes because their proportions differ.

Account for Seat Shape

A deep seat with a high cantle and prominent swell can feel more confined than a flatter seat with the same measurement. Padding, rise, and ground-seat shape influence usable room. Brand-specific systems may also fit differently.

Check Your Position in the Saddle

You should have enough room to sit centered without being forced against the swell or cantle. Too much room can make it difficult to stay balanced; too little can restrict movement and place the rider incorrectly over the horse.

Fit the Horse First

A comfortable rider seat does not make the tree suitable for the horse. Narrow the tree and skirt choices for the horse, then choose the rider seat among compatible saddles.
