How to Choose Western Saddle Skirt Length

Choose saddle skirt length by starting with the usable length of your horse's back, then make sure the saddle also gives the rider enough seat. The goal is to avoid unnecessary interference near the horse's hip while still using a saddle designed to distribute the rider's weight properly.

This matters most on short-backed horses, but skirt length is worth checking on any horse when you're comparing saddles.

Where Should the Saddle Sit?

Before measuring anything, place the saddle behind the shoulder blade rather than too far forward. A saddle positioned incorrectly can make the rear look too long and can create shoulder interference at the same time.

Round Skirt or Square Skirt?

Round skirts are often useful when you need to reduce the amount of material behind the tree. Square skirts work well when the horse has enough back length and the saddle's overall dimensions are appropriate.

Do not choose from skirt shape alone. Two round-skirt saddles can have different overall lengths, and a compact square-skirt saddle may be shorter than another model with a round skirt.

Does Seat Size Determine Skirt Length?

Not always. Some manufacturers change skirt length as the rider seat gets larger, while other models keep similar overall dimensions across several seat sizes.

That is why we prefer to look at the actual saddle measurements whenever back length is a concern.

Don't Sacrifice Rider Fit Just to Shorten the Saddle

Putting the rider in a seat that is too small can create its own balance and comfort problems. Instead, find a saddle design that combines the correct rider seat with a shorter skirt or more compact overall profile.
