How to Check Western Saddle Fit When Your Saddle Arrives

When a western saddle arrives, check it on the horse before assuming that new equals correct. Start without a pad, set the saddle in its natural position behind the shoulder blade, and evaluate the whole tree—not just the gullet. A careful first check can identify an obvious mismatch before the saddle is ridden in or shows wear.

Start With the Horse Standing Square

Use level ground and have the horse stand as evenly as possible. Place the saddle gently on the bare, clean back without cinching it. Slide it slightly from front to back and allow it to settle behind the shoulder blade rather than placing it on top of the shoulders. Our saddle-positioning guide shows why placement matters.

Check the Tree From Front to Back

Look for reasonably even contact along the bars. The saddle should not perch mainly at the front, rock noticeably, or leave a large unsupported area through the middle. Check that the angle at the front of the bars generally follows the horse instead of pinching at the top or standing away at the bottom. Gullet clearance matters, but it cannot confirm fit by itself.

Add the Pad and Cinch

Next, repeat the check with the pad you intend to use. Cinch the saddle as you normally would, then verify that the saddle remains behind the shoulders and has adequate clearance without being perched too high. A pad can fine-tune a close fit, but it should not be used to hide a major tree mismatch.

Evaluate Carefully Under a Rider

If the static checks look reasonable and the saddle remains eligible for a trial under the applicable terms, begin with a short, controlled ride. Watch for unusual movement, resistance, shortened stride, or concentrated pressure. Sweat patterns may add information after a sufficient ride, but no single mark should be treated as a complete diagnosis. Review the signs of poor saddle fit as part of the evaluation.
