Best Saddles for Swayback Horses

With a swayback horse, the main goal is even pressure distribution. A saddle that bridges across the dipped topline can concentrate the rider's weight at the front and rear instead of supporting the horse evenly.

We normally start with a lightweight saddle that suits the horse's tree width and the rider's needs, then use the appropriate pad only to fine-tune the fit. The pad is especially important on a swayback horse, but it should work with the saddle rather than rescue a clearly incorrect tree.

Why Swayback Horses Need Extra Care

A swayback creates more curve in the horse's topline. A saddle that is too straight from front to back may contact strongly near the shoulders and rear while leaving less contact through the center.

Because the goal is to spread the rider's weight, we want to avoid heavy saddles and major pressure concentrations whenever possible.

Start With the Correct Tree Width

Swayback describes the horse's topline, not the width of the shoulders. A swayback horse might still need a Medium, Wide, or another tree size depending on the individual horse.

Choose a Lighter Saddle When Practical

For pleasure and trail use, a lighter saddle can reduce the total load carried by a horse whose back already requires careful pressure management. Synthetic and lightweight trail designs are often worth considering when they otherwise fit the horse and rider.

The Pad Matters, But It Has a Specific Job

A swayback or shim-style pad can help fill a moderate dip and improve pressure distribution. It should not be used to hide severe pinching, a tree that is obviously too wide or narrow, or a saddle that is fundamentally the wrong shape.

If your horse also has high withers, both issues need to be considered together rather than treating one in isolation.
